What is Sophos SPX Email Encryption Appliance?

The Sophos Appliance (which is either hardware or virtual) sits between your internal email system and the internet or smarthost. When an email is either sent or received, it is passed through the appliance to analyse and take appropriate action. This could be anything from encrypting an outbound email to deleting a spam email coming in.

Information on how the Email Encryption process works

When an email is analysed and meets the criteria to be encrypted, the appliance encrypts the content of the email and attaches it as a PDF. The PDF is encrypted using either 128-bit or 256-bit AES FIPS-140-2 encryption certification. When the recipient receives the email, they open the PDF file by inputting the password. Should the recipient wish to reply securely to the email, they can do so by clicking a link within the PDF. The link takes them to an email web portal on the Sophos SPX Email Encryption Appliance to type the message. This is then sent securely back to the original sender with the option of securely copying the original recipient should they wish.
